About The Clinic

Rabies Protection, Planned Around Your Journey

Rabies risk is not limited to dogs. In many destinations, bites, scratches or saliva exposure from cats, monkeys, bats and other mammals can require urgent treatment. Your consultation considers where you are travelling, the animals you may encounter, the length and style of your trip, and how quickly reliable medical care could be reached.

Where pre-exposure vaccination is suitable, we’ll plan the course around your travel date and explain what it does — and does not — change after an exposure. You’ll leave with a vaccination record and clear advice on immediate wound care and when to seek urgent medical help abroad.

Why Vaccinate?

Why Rabies Vaccination Matters

Rabies is a viral infection spread through the saliva of infected mammals. Once symptoms develop it is almost always fatal, but prompt wound care and the correct post-exposure treatment are highly effective. Pre-exposure vaccination can simplify treatment when travelling far from reliable care.

Animal Contact Can Be Unexpected

Dogs cause most human rabies cases worldwide, but cats, monkeys, bats and other mammals can also transmit infection. Even a small scratch or lick on broken skin may need assessment.

Remote Travel Changes the Risk

Vaccination is often considered for longer trips, rural travel, cycling or running, animal work, caving, and destinations where rabies immunoglobulin or specialist care may be difficult to access quickly.

Vaccination Does Not Replace Urgent Care

After any possible exposure, wash the area thoroughly with soap and running water for about 15 minutes, apply an antiseptic if available, and seek urgent medical advice. Vaccinated travellers still need post-exposure vaccine doses.

Rabies Decision Guide

Should You Consider Rabies Vaccination?

Use these practical prompts before your consultation. Your final recommendation depends on your itinerary, activities, medical history and departure date.

Vaccination may be worth considering if…

Vaccination may be worth considering if…

You’ll be away for a longer period; visiting rural or remote areas; cycling, running, camping, caving or working outdoors; likely to handle animals; travelling with children; or going somewhere prompt post-exposure treatment may be difficult to obtain.

After a bite, scratch or saliva exposure

After a bite, scratch or saliva exposure

Wash immediately and thoroughly for about 15 minutes. Apply antiseptic if available. Seek urgent medical care without waiting for symptoms, even if you completed a rabies vaccine course before travel. Do not rely on the animal appearing healthy.
